Valley community garden opens a lottery for 40 new plots
A volunteer group has doubled the size of its Mendenhall Valley garden, and the waiting list is long. Here is how the lottery works.
A volunteer-run community garden in the Mendenhall Valley will open a lottery next month for forty new raised-bed plots, nearly doubling its size after a summer of building that drew help from scouts, retirees and a high school shop class.
The garden has had a waiting list for as long as anyone involved can remember, said Hal Petrov, who coordinates the group’s volunteers. Last spring the list passed 120 names, prompting the group to lease an adjoining lot and raise money for lumber, soil and a deer fence.
