A morning on Taku Inlet, before the fog lifted
Fog, seals and the face of a glacier at sunrise. Members read it first; everyone can read it a few days after it’s published.
We left the harbor before five, when the channel was black glass and the only sound was the outboard. The town was still asleep behind us, a few porch lights and the red blink of a radio tower, and the mountains were only shapes against a slightly lighter sky. Our skipper, a retired commercial fisherman named Walt Becker who has run this water for forty years, steered by memory and the glow of a small screen.
