From Gold Rush to Capital City, part 3: the capital moves north
In 1906 the seat of Alaska’s government moved from Sitka to the growing mining town of Juneau.
By the turn of the century, Juneau had outgrown its mining-camp beginnings. It had wharves, schools, newspapers and a growing role as a supply center for the region and for prospectors heading north to the Klondike.
Congress had already voted to move the capital from Sitka, and in 1906 the government offices began operating from Juneau.
