Alaska became a state in 1959. Juneau remained its capital, through more than one vote to move it.
When Alaska became the forty-ninth state in 1959, Juneau became a state capital with no road connecting it to the rest of the state, a fact that still surprises visitors.
Over the following decades, Alaskans voted more than once on moving the capital closer to the population centers to the north. Each time, the move stalled.
